trying to find out how much a horse is worth??/we are looking at a 15.3 bay colored t.b.that has been in a pasture for a year...can w/t/c/ and walk over cross-rails and maybe jump a little...but tha starting price was 6,ooo
and now is 3,000 but we still hear people say a horse without training should be about 1,200 ....help...how do you find out ...and the price difference is coming from the trainers at our barn..so we are a little leary of their suggestions.....help he is a retired race horse who ran one time and came in last...

In response to newcomer to horse ownership buying our 1st posted by papergirl56:

The folks who are telling you an untrained horse should be around $1,200.00 are nearest to correct. However, a horse is worth whatever someone will pay! I know that doesn't help. If you are buying your first horse, you should be looking for an older gelding, maybe twelve to fifteen years old, who has been ridden a lot in many different situations. The people selling a retired racehorse are trying to re-coup some of their money most likely. As a first time horse buyer, you need a horse who has "been there and done that" - in other words one with a lot of experience.
I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have..
