I like what I've read in this article. Bits and bridles were the accepted thing but I remember, as a kid, sometimes going out to the pasture and climbing on my horse to ride bareback and bridleless. I mostly just went where he wanted to go but if I pushed on his neck he'd usually turn. Looking back, I think I could have "trained" him to respond without even a bridle.
